Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is a natural material formed from the fossilized remains of microscopic algae known as diatoms. Millions of years ago, these tiny aquatic organisms lived in oceans and lakes around the world. When they died, their silica-rich shells settled on the seabed and gradually formed soft, porous stone deposits.
Large deposits were first identified in the 19th century in northern Germany, where scientists discovered that this unique material had remarkable absorbent properties. Because of its naturally porous structure, diatomaceous earth can quickly absorb moisture and release it back into the air.
Today, this ancient natural material is used in household products such as drying mats, where it helps water disappear within moments.
